Historic nineteenth-century cast-iron façades and Belgian block cobblestones along Greene Street in the heart of SoHo.

SoHo Cast-Iron Streets, Nolita Cafés & Little Italy: Architecture, Espresso & Scorsese’s Downtown

To close this five-day series of New York walks, I saved one of the routes that best captures the energy of Downtown Manhattan: the contrast between SoHo’s nineteenth-century cast-iron façades, Nolita’s intimate sidewalk cafés and bookshops, and the streets of Little Italy where Martin Scorsese and Francis Ford Coppola filmed some of cinema’s most unforgettable scenes.

Stopp 1 · SoHo, NYC · Cast-iron façades & cobbles

Greene Street Cast-Iron District

Belgian block cobblestones and 19th-century cast-iron loft buildings in the heart of SoHo.

Greene Street & Mercer Street: SoHo's open-air architecture museum

To experience the real SoHo (South of Houston), skip the big retail crowds on Broadway and walk one or two blocks west along Greene Street and Mercer Street between Houston and Canal Street. Here stands the world's greatest collection of nineteenth-century cast-iron architecture above Belgian block cobblestones.

Look up at the tall loft windows that artists turned into studios in the 1970s and that starred in films like Ghost (Patrick Swayze and Demi Moore's loft is at 102 Prince Street) and Martin Scorsese's cult classic After Hours.

Crossing into Nolita: specialty coffee, bookshops and neighbourhood life

Cross Lafayette Street eastward and the scale shifts immediately: you enter Nolita (North of Little Italy), a neighbourhood of narrow tree-lined blocks along Elizabeth Street, Mott Street and Mulberry Street. It is the ideal midpoint for a slow coffee and bookshop stop:

  • Prince Street & McNally Jackson Books: the literary and coffee heart of the neighbourhood—browse the film and photography shelves before grabbing a cortado or a classic slice at Prince Street Pizza.
  • Elizabeth Street Garden (between Prince & Spring St): a sculpture-filled community garden with shaded benches tucked between brick tenements, one of Downtown's loveliest quiet corners.
  • Old St. Patrick's Cathedral (263 Mulberry St): surrounded by its high brick wall, this 1815 church was the real filming location for the baptism sequence in The Godfather (1972) and the home turf of Scorsese's Mean Streets.

Mulberry Street and the classic flavours of Little Italy

Walk south down Mulberry Street toward Grand and Broome Streets. Even as Little Italy blends seamlessly into vibrant Chinatown next door, century-old family institutions remain unmissable: stop for fresh mozzarella and prosciutto at Di Palo's Fine Foods (open since 1910 at 200 Grand Street) and finish with a freshly piped cannoli and espresso at Ferrara Bakery & Cafe (195 Grand Street, founded in 1892).

How to link all 5 walks on your New York trip: each of these five guides is paced for a relaxed half-day on foot: Day 1 in Central Park, Day 2 in Greenwich Village, Day 3 across the Brooklyn Bridge into DUMBO, Day 4 along the High Line and Chelsea, and Day 5 through SoHo, Nolita and Little Italy.

A farewell on foot in New York City

New York is an inexhaustible city that changes its script on every block. My advice after living and walking here is simple: put the map away every now and then, look up at the fire escapes, and let every corner tell you its own movie.
