The best bakeries are often a street away from the main road.

Read reviews like a local

Star ratings are a starting point, not the whole story. A 4.5-star rating from 1,500 reviews is far more reliable than a perfect 5.0 from twelve, because a big sample smooths out both rave reviews from friends and one-off bad days. When you open a listing, do three quick checks:

  • Recency. Sort reviews by newest. Kitchens change hands, and a place that was brilliant three years ago may not be now.
  • Food photos. Look for customer photos of what's on the plate, not just the décor.
  • Specific praise. "Best sourdough I've had in years" tells you more than "nice place".

Spot the signals on a map

Even before reading reviews, a map tells you a lot. Clusters of well-rated cafés usually mean a neighbourhood with a strong food scene, and places just off a main street are often better value than those facing it. Markets, food halls and streets near universities tend to have lots of affordable options. Early opening hours (7am or earlier) usually mean a serious bakery that bakes on site. Be a little cautious right next to major landmarks: some places are great, but many rely on passing tourists rather than regulars.

Timing matters

  • Bakeries are best early, before the popular items sell out.
  • Cafés near offices often empty out after the morning rush, so mid-morning is a good time to sit down.
  • Lunch spots are quietest before about 12:15 or after 1:45.
  • Sunday and Monday closures are common for independents. Check before you set off.
Practical tip: if a place has a queue, check the "popular times" chart on its listing. A 15-minute wait at noon might be no wait at all at 11:30.

A Dublin food walk

Starting near Bolton Street, Capel Street has a long line of independent cafés and restaurants serving everything from brunch to dumplings. Across the river, South William Street and the area around George's Street Arcade are packed with options for lunch. A Gastro route between the two passes enough choice that you can pick based on what you're craving rather than what's closest. Opening times vary a lot, so look before you leave.

Fit food into the route, not the other way round

The best food detour adds a few minutes, not half an hour. As a rough rule for walking, keep a food stop within about 10% of your total route length: on a 3 km walk, that's roughly 300 metres off your path. On a longer day out, space stops at least 30–45 minutes of walking apart so you actually get hungry again. And "Gastro" doesn't have to mean a full meal: a pastry, a coffee or an ice cream all count.

Walk it off

A walking Gastro route gives you a reason to explore and a bit of movement between stops. On longer trips, pair a food stop with a park so you have somewhere pleasant to eat a takeaway. Bring a reusable bottle and cup to cut down on waste.

Allergies and dietary needs

Ratings alone won't tell you whether a place suits your diet. Check the menu online, look for mentions in recent reviews, and always confirm with staff before ordering if you have an allergy. Small kitchens often can't guarantee allergen separation.

Be a good customer

Small places run on small margins. Don't hold a big table for an hour over one coffee at peak lunchtime, take your litter with you, and leave a short, specific review if you loved it. That's how the next person finds it.
