Étape 1 · Dún Laoghaire · Granite harbour pier

Dún Laoghaire East Pier

Flat 1.3 km granite pier walk with two levels and wide views across Dublin Bay to Howth.

Starting on the East Pier at Dún Laoghaire

Step out of Dún Laoghaire DART station across from the LexIcon library and walk out along the upper or lower level of the East Pier. Built of massive granite blocks in the nineteenth century, the pier stretches 1.3 km into the bay with views back towards Howth Head and the Poolbeg chimneys. The surface is wide, flat and step-free all the way to the lighthouse at the tip.

Along the seafront to Scotsman's Bay, Sandycove and the Forty Foot

  • People's Park & Fallon & Byrne Tea Rooms: at the foot of the East Pier, with a weekend farmers' market, playground and Victorian pavilion.
  • Scotsman's Bay promenade: a dedicated seaside footpath and protected two-way cycleway running right beside the water with benches every few hundred metres.
  • Sandycove Beach & the Forty Foot: a tiny sheltered sandy cove for paddling with children right next to the famous rocky promontory where Dubliners swim in the Irish Sea every day of the year, just below the James Joyce Tower.
Extending the walk to Bullock Harbour and Dalkey: if your legs are fresh at the Forty Foot, follow the quiet coast road past Bullock Harbour (watch for seals by the fishing boats) and turn up Ulverton Road into Dalkey Village for lunch and the DART home from Dalkey station.

Buggies, dogs and wind on the pier

From Dún Laoghaire station to Sandycove Beach the entire route is paved and buggy-friendly, with step-free ramps down to the promenade. Only the final rock steps down into the Forty Foot bathing pool are uneven. Even on a warm afternoon in town, the breeze off Dublin Bay is a few degrees cooler, so pack an extra windproof layer.
