Walking after dark: how to plan a safer evening route

Evening walks can be lovely: cooler air, quieter streets and city lights reflecting on the water. But the route that's perfect at lunchtime isn't always the best choice after dark. A few simple habits help you stay safe and confident without giving up on walking in the evening.

Choose busy and well-lit over short and quiet

At night, the best route is usually the one with good lighting, open businesses and other people around, even if it takes a few minutes longer. Main streets with restaurants, shops and public transport stops often feel safer than shortcuts through parks, alleys or empty industrial areas.

Rule of thumb: if you wouldn't be comfortable walking a section alone at night, plan around it. A five-minute detour is a small price for peace of mind.

Rethink green routes after dark

Parks, towpaths and riverside paths are some of the best places to walk by day, but many are poorly lit at night and some close at dusk. In the evening, consider the Sightseer or Gastro vibe instead of Greener, as those stops tend to be on busier, better-lit streets. Or simply take the direct route.

Plan before you go

Look at your route before setting off so you're not stopping on dark streets to check your phone. Note a few places along the way where you could go if you needed help: a late-opening shop, a hotel lobby, a pub or a station. Save the route on your device so you can reopen it quickly.

Share your plans

Let a friend or family member know where you're going and when you expect to arrive. Most phones have built-in location sharing, and messaging apps let you share your live location for a set time. It takes seconds.

Stay aware

Keep your phone handy but not constantly in your hand, and keep at least one ear free if you wear headphones. Walk confidently and trust your instincts: if something feels wrong, cross the road, go into a busy shop or change your route.

Be visible near traffic

Drivers can struggle to see pedestrians at night, especially in rain. Wear something light-coloured or reflective if you'll walk along roads without pavements, and use marked crossings.

An evening route in Dublin

An evening walk along the Liffey quays, crossing at one of the well-lit central bridges, gives you city lights and reflections with busy streets close by. Areas with plenty of restaurants and pubs, such as around Temple Bar and South Great George's Street, stay lively in the evening. Some canal sections and the edges of larger parks can be very dark at night, and many locals save them for daylight.

Have a backup

Know how you'll get home if plans change: the last bus or train, a taxi app, or a friend you can call. Keep your phone charged and consider carrying a small power bank. In an emergency, call 112 or 999 in Ireland and the UK, or 112 elsewhere in the EU.

Cycling at night

Use front and rear lights, wear something visible and choose routes with good street lighting. In Ireland, lights are a legal requirement when cycling at night.
