Buggy-friendly walks: how to plan a pram route without the stress

A walk with a buggy can be the most relaxing part of the day or a long fight with kerbs, gravel and steps. The difference is almost always in the planning. A route that looks perfect on a map can hide a flight of steps, a narrow gate or a muddy path. Here's how to choose routes that roll, whether you're pushing a newborn in a pram or a toddler who will want out halfway.

Salthill Promenade

Wide, smooth tarmac beside the sea with zero kerbs and easy café stops.

Start with the surface

The surface matters more than the distance. Tarmac paths, paved promenades and wide park avenues are easy going for any buggy. Fine gravel is fine for most all-terrain buggies but hard work for small wheels. Grass, sand, mud and cobbles are the ones to avoid unless you have big tyres and plenty of patience.

Seafront promenades and the main avenues of big city parks are usually the safest bets. Canal towpaths are lovely but can be narrow, shared with cyclists and muddy after rain, so check before you commit.

Look for step-free links

The weak points of a route are usually the joins: a footbridge with steps, a park entrance with a kissing gate, an underpass with stairs. Before you go, zoom in on Street View at bridges, crossings and park gates. If a route crosses a river or a railway, check how it crosses: ramps, a lift or a road bridge with a pavement.

Practical tip: dropped kerbs at crossings make a huge difference. Main shopping streets and newer developments tend to have them; older side streets often don't.

Plan around toilets and changing

Know where your next toilet is before you need it. Shopping centres, large supermarkets, libraries, museums and park visitor centres are the most reliable places for toilets and baby changing. Cafés vary a lot, so don't count on them unless you've checked. Plan a route that passes at least one good option roughly every hour.

Choose a loop with a way out

Babies and toddlers change the plan without warning. A loop that passes your start point halfway, or a route near bus stops, gives you a way out if someone gets hungry, tired or upset. A long one-way walk with nothing in the middle is the hardest kind of route with a buggy.

Watch out for hidden obstacles

  • Narrow pavements on old streets, where you end up pushing into the road.
  • Gates and barriers on park and canal paths, designed to stop bikes but awkward for wide buggies.
  • Hills. A gentle climb is fine; a steep one is tiring on the way up and nerve-racking on the way down.
  • Busy crowds on market days and at festivals, when manoeuvring is slow.

Get the buggy ready for the weather

In Ireland, plan for rain whatever the forecast says. A rain cover that fits properly, a blanket that can't trail into the wheels and a footmuff for colder days keep a baby comfortable when the weather turns. On bright, windy days, a sunshade and a light layer are just as useful. Check the forecast from Met Éireann before longer walks.

Good kinds of routes to start with

Start with promenades, big city parks and pedestrian streets, then build up to towpaths and coastal paths once you know what your buggy can handle. The Salthill Promenade in Galway is a classic: long, wide, paved and right beside the sea, with plenty of places to stop. In Dublin, the main paths in Phoenix Park are wide and well surfaced.

What to pack

  • Nappies, wipes and a changing mat.
  • Snacks and drinks for everyone, not just the baby.
  • A rain cover and an extra layer.
  • A small bag for rubbish.
  • A charged phone, with the route saved in case the signal drops.
