Canal and river paths make some of the best green corridors.

Greener commutes: why a park detour is worth it

Walking or cycling through green space instead of along a busy road can make a commute calmer and more pleasant. Trees give shade in summer and shelter from wind, parks are usually quieter and further from heavy traffic, and there's simply more to look at. You don't have to move to the countryside to get those benefits. Most cities have a greener version of almost every journey, if you know where to look.

Why green routes feel better

Researchers who study cities have repeatedly linked time around trees, water and grass with lower stress and better mood. We won't promise a miracle from a ten-minute stroll, but most people notice the difference straight away: less noise, fewer fumes, softer light and the chance to watch the seasons change. A commute that feels pleasant is also one you're more likely to keep doing on foot or by bike.

Small detours, big difference

You don't need a forest. A pocket park, a canal towpath, a river walk or a tree-lined avenue all count. In many cities a green alternative adds only a few minutes to a typical walk, and it often feels shorter because it's more pleasant. The trick is to look for green corridors: lines of trees, water or parks running roughly in the direction you're already going. Canals and rivers are especially useful because they're long, continuous and usually flat.

Rule of thumb: if the green option adds less than about 10% to the journey time, it's almost always worth taking. If it adds more than 25%, save it for days when you're not in a hurry.

Dublin's canals

Dublin has two canals that arc around the city centre: the Grand Canal on the south side and the Royal Canal on the north. Both have towpaths popular with walkers, runners and cyclists. If your commute runs across the south city, following the Grand Canal for even part of the way swaps traffic noise for water, trees and swans. On the north side, the Royal Canal towpath offers a similar escape.

Larger green spaces like Phoenix Park, St Stephen's Green, Merrion Square and the Iveagh Gardens can also be worked into a route if they sit roughly between your start and finish.

Tips for a greener route

  • Check park opening hours. Many parks close at dusk or at fixed times, especially in winter, and a locked gate can turn a shortcut into a long way round.
  • Share paths politely. Canal and river paths are flat and ideal for cycling, but they can be narrow. Slow down and ring your bell when passing walkers.
  • Stay on paved paths in the wet. Grass shortcuts turn muddy fast.
  • Go green on the way home, when you have more time to slow down.
  • Experiment. Try a different green corridor each week for a month, then keep your favourite.

Greener by bike

Cyclists benefit even more from green routes because parks and towpaths often separate you from motor traffic. Check whether cycling is allowed before you go: some parks permit bikes only on certain roads, and some heritage gardens don't allow them at all. Where cycling is allowed, keep your speed down around children and dogs. Our planner uses Google Maps' cycling directions, which already favour cycle lanes and quieter roads where data is available.

Green routes through the seasons

Spring blossom and longer evenings make it the best time to start the habit. In summer, tree cover keeps you cooler. Autumn is beautiful, but wet leaves get slippery on paths and bridges. In winter, use green routes in daylight and switch to well-lit streets after dark.

Stay safe

After dark, choose well-lit paths and let someone know your route. Parks that feel lovely at lunchtime can feel isolated at night, and some canal paths are poorly lit. If a park feels too quiet, the direct route is always a fine choice.
