Walking the High Line, Chelsea Galleries & Hudson River Sunset: Elevated Gardens Above Manhattan

One of the things that fascinated me most while living in New York is how the city reinvents its industrial scars. The High Line—a 1930s elevated freight rail line transformed into a linear garden suspended nine metres above the street—lets you walk for nearly 2.5 kilometres without a single traffic light, watching Manhattan unfold like a continuous tracking shot.

Stopp 1 · Hudson Yards, NYC · Elevated rail trailhead

High Line North (34th St & Hudson Yards)

Step-free northern ramp onto the High Line curving around Hudson Yards with views of the Hudson River.

Walking north to south: from Hudson Yards toward the Meatpacking District

While many visitors join the High Line at the southern end, I recommend starting at the northern entrance (34th Street & 12th Avenue by Hudson Yards) and walking south toward Gansevoort Street. That way you walk into the sunlight with the Hudson River always on your right and views of Lower Manhattan opening ahead of you.

Piet Oudolf's planting design weaves native grasses, birches and wildflowers right around the original steel rails, flanked by striking buildings by Zaha Hadid, Frank Gehry and Jean Nouvel alongside classic brick warehouses crowned with wooden water towers.

The Tenth Avenue Amphitheatre & Chelsea gallery district

At West 17th Street (10th Avenue Square & Overlook) the path steps down into wooden amphitheatre seating facing a sunken glass window suspended directly over Tenth Avenue traffic. Sitting there for ten minutes watching yellow cabs and pedestrians flow beneath you feels like pure New York documentary cinema.

Food stop at Chelsea Market & crossing to Little Island

  • Chelsea Market (between 15th & 16th Streets): take the 16th Street stairs down into the former factory where the Oreo cookie was invented, now packed with artisanal bakeries, coffee roasters, Posman Books and global food stalls.
  • Little Island at Pier 55 (West 13th Street & Hudson River): cross over to Hudson River Park to explore this floating park supported by 132 concrete tulip pots above the water, complete with an open-air amphitheatre.
  • Gansevoort Street & the Whitney Museum: finish the southern stretch of the High Line at Gansevoort Street right beside Renzo Piano's terraced Whitney Museum of American Art.
Best time to walk the High Line: midday on weekends gets crowded along the narrower boardwalk sections. Walk on a weekday morning or start 90 minutes before sunset so you finish on the Hudson River piers as the sun drops behind New Jersey.

Continuing south along the Hudson River Park esplanade

If you still have energy after descending at Gansevoort Street, keep walking south along the waterfront path of Hudson River Park to the Greenwich Village piers (Pier 45 at Christopher Street), where locals stretch out on the lawns by the water.
