Howth Harbour & West Pier

Flat harbour walk past fishing boats and seals right outside Howth DART station.

Harbour warm-up vs the Cliff Path climb

From Howth DART station you can either turn left onto the West and East Piers for a flat 2.5 km harbour walk on wide concrete and stone surfaces, or turn left along the water past the Martello tower up onto the Nose of Howth where the 6 km Cliff Path Loop (Green trail) begins.

Walking the Howth Cliff Path safely with dogs

  • Keep dogs on a short fixed lead on the cliff section: the coastal path between Balscadden Bay and the summit car park runs along unfenced drops with nesting seabirds below. Never use an unlocked extendable lead near the edge.
  • Check paws on gravel and quartzite: the trail surface switches between earthen headland paths, stone steps and rough quartzite rock, especially on the climb up to the Ben of Howth tramway return.
  • Carry your own water and collapsible bowl: once you leave Balscadden Road there are no taps or freshwater streams along the cliff edge until you loop back into the village.
Best time of day on the headland: sunny Sunday afternoons bring heavy foot traffic along the narrowest sections of the cliff path. Catch an early DART before 9:00 am or walk on a weekday morning when you have the heather trails and views across to Ireland's Eye almost to yourself.

Photographing Ireland's Eye and the Bailey Lighthouse

In the morning the sun lights up the rocky island of Ireland's Eye and the mountains of Mourne to the north; late in the afternoon the southern side of the loop above the Bailey Lighthouse looks straight across Dublin Bay towards Dún Laoghaire and the Wicklow Mountains.
