Pine and eucalyptus corridor along the perimeter of Bosque Los Colomos and North Providencia

Around Bosque Los Colomos & North Providencia with dogs: pine shade and cool morning air

When I lived in Colonia Providencia in 2025, having Bosque Los Colomos just a few blocks north was a daily privilege. There is one essential rule every dog owner in Guadalajara should know before setting off: pets are not allowed inside the protected natural area of Bosque Los Colomos in order to protect its squirrels, birds and wildlife. However, walking its shaded, pine-lined perimeter from North Providencia with Renzo, Dona and Pachin became our coolest morning loop in the entire city.

El Chaco Perimeter (Los Colomos Edge)

Outer pavement beside the forest where you breathe cool pine and eucalyptus air.

The Bosque Los Colomos rule — and why the perimeter is so rewarding

Bosque Los Colomos is a protected natural area and its regulations prohibit entering the interior trails with dogs. However, the entire outer strip bordering Colomos Providencia and Providencia 4th and 5th Sections is lined with pines, eucalyptus and casuarina trees that cast dense shade and lower the temperature by several degrees compared with the rest of Guadalajara.

Key tip before you go: do not try to enter the main gates at El Chaco or Paseo del Torreón with your dogs; instead, follow the wooded outer corridor along the forest fence that connects with the neighbourhood parks of North Providencia.

Our favourite loop from Providencia to the edge of Colomos

In 2025 we used to set off from the heart of Providencia up quiet streets towards Avenida Montevideo and link up with Calle El Chaco and Paseo del Torreón. As soon as you approach the edge of the woods, the air changes completely: it smells of damp pine needles and eucalyptus resin. Pachin would lift his nose two blocks early, and Dona always quickened her pace because she knew the pavement there was cool.

  • Section 1 — Climb through North Providencia: calm residential streets with very little early-morning traffic.
  • Section 2 — Edge of El Chaco & Paseo del Torreón: cool pavements right beside the forest canopy of Los Colomos, with birdsong and a breeze even in May.
  • Section 3 — Parks of Providencia 4th Section: open neighbourhood gardens where you can walk on lead beneath tall trees before heading home.

Runners, cyclists and early-morning etiquette

Between 6:30 and 9:00 a.m., the streets around Los Colomos are a popular meeting point for runners heading to or from the forest. When walking three dogs like Renzo, Dona and Pachin, keep leads short around blind corners and leave the outer side of the pavement clear for runners to pass.

Rainy season in Guadalajara: the best scent of the year

If you walk this area between June and September, the morning after a nighttime Guadalajara thunderstorm is unforgettable. Damp earth and fallen pine needles along the pavement make dogs enjoy the walk twice as much through scent alone — just pack a small towel in your day bag to wipe their paws on the way home.
