Washington Square Arch in Greenwich Village, the starting point for countless New York film and literary stories.

Greenwich Village, Washington Square & Indie Cinema: Brownstones, Cafés & Arthouse Screens

If Central Park is Manhattan’s big studio production, Greenwich Village is its favourite independent film. Here New York’s numbered grid gives way to diagonal streets with names, red-brick brownstone stoops, subterranean jazz clubs and two of the arthouse cinemas I loved most while living in the city: the IFC Center and Film Forum.

Washington Square Arch & Fountain

Marble triumphal arch framing Fifth Avenue and the open-air musical heart of Greenwich Village.

Washington Square Park: the Village's open-air stage

Every great Village walk begins beneath the marble arch of Washington Square Park, looking north with the Empire State Building framed dead-centre through the arch. Within a few dozen metres you pass live jazz trios, speed-chess tables and memorable scenes from When Harry Met Sally, the Coen brothers' Inside Llewyn Davis and Begin Again.

MacDougal Street and a century-old espresso stop

Leave the southern edge of the park onto MacDougal Street. At number 119 stands Caffe Reggio, open since 1927, which introduced cappuccino to America and hosted scenes in The Godfather Part II, Serpico and Inside Llewyn Davis. Sitting at its marble tables beside the original 1902 chrome-and-bronze espresso machine feels like stepping straight into classic New York.

The West Village labyrinth: Bedford, Grove and Commerce Street

Cross Sixth Avenue past the neon marquee of the IFC Center (the historic Waverly Theater) and wander into the leafy residential streets of the West Village where traffic fades away:

  • Corner of Grove Street & Bedford Street: one of New York's most photographed corners, famous for the exterior of the Friends apartment building and lined with neighbourhood cafés.
  • Commerce Street & Cherry Lane Theatre: a curving red-brick lane that feels untouched since the 1950s, steps from the narrowest house in Manhattan at 75½ Bedford Street.
  • Film Forum on West Houston Street (209 W Houston St): an essential pilgrimage for any film lover in New York, screening restored 35mm classics and world premieres.
Pairing the walk with a screening: check the afternoon programme at IFC Center (323 Sixth Ave) or Film Forum (209 W Houston St). Stepping out of a screening at dusk and walking past lit brownstone windows in the West Village is unforgettable.

Finishing along Bleecker Street

Wrap up your walk strolling up Bleecker Street past historic Italian bakeries like Rocco's Pasticceria, vinyl record shops and independent bookshops before dinner.
