Diamond Hill with dogs: climbing Connemara National Park on a lead

Diamond Hill rises straight up behind the Connemara National Park Visitor Centre in Letterfrack, and its summit has one of the best views in the west: the Twelve Bens, Kylemore Abbey, Tully Mountain and the islands scattered off the coast. The trails are well built, the loop is short enough for a morning, and dogs are welcome on a lead. It's the perfect first big walk in Connemara with your dogs.

Connemara National Park Trailhead

Check conditions, fill dog water bottles and pick the Lower or Upper loop.

The trails

All four waymarked trails start and finish at the Visitor Centre, so you can choose on the day depending on the weather and how your dogs are feeling.

  • Ellis Wood Nature Trail (green, 0.5 km, easy): stone steps, boardwalk and woodland. A good leg-stretch after the drive.
  • Sruffaunboy Trail (yellow, 1.5 km, easy): stone and gravel, with views of Diamond Hill and Ballynakill Harbour. Watch for the steep descent near the end.
  • Lower Diamond Hill (blue, 3 km, moderate): an old bog road, tracks, steps and boardwalk, with about 90 m of climbing and views out to the Atlantic.
  • Upper Diamond Hill (red, 3.7 km, strenuous): continues from the lower trail up a stone path to the summit ridge, then down the far side on boardwalk.

For the summit, follow the lower trail and then the upper loop. It's around 7 km in total from the Visitor Centre. At 442 m the summit isn't high, but the top section is steep and exposed. Allow two and a half to three hours with stops for photos and water.

Dog rules: dogs are welcome in the National Park but must be on a lead at all times, and bagged dog poo has to be carried home. Cycling isn't allowed on the trails.

Ponies, sheep and wildlife

The park is home to Connemara ponies and traditional farm breeds, including sheep, cattle and donkeys, and you may meet them close to the paths. Keep leads short as you pass, give the animals plenty of room and don't let dogs bark at or chase them. The park's own code for dog owners also asks you to remember that other visitors may be nervous around dogs, which matters on the narrow summit path.

Paws, steps and boardwalk

The paths are well maintained, but the upper trail has long stretches of stone steps that are tiring for small or older dogs, and the summit rock is rough. If your dogs aren't used to climbing, do the lower loop first and come back for the top another day. On the boardwalks, walk dogs in single file so nobody steps off the edge onto soft bog.

Weather on the hill

Connemara weather changes fast, and the summit ridge catches the full force of the Atlantic wind. Bring a waterproof and a warm layer even when it's calm in Letterfrack, and turn back if cloud comes down over the top: the view is the point, and the steps are slippery when wet. There's little shade or water on the way up, so carry enough for you and the dogs.

Photos from the top

From the summit ridge, the Twelve Bens fill the view to the south-east and Kylemore Abbey sits by its lake below you to the north-east. Late afternoon and evening light falls on the side of the Bens that faces you, while clearing showers bring the most dramatic skies. Use the boardwalk or the line of the path as a lead-in for a wide shot, and for a photo of the dogs, ask them to sit just below the skyline and shoot from slightly lower down so they stand out against the sky.

Before and after

The Visitor Centre has a car park, toilets, picnic tables and a tea room, which makes it an easy base. Check the National Park website for opening times and notices before you go, especially in winter, and arrive early on summer weekends, when the car park fills up.
