Tree-lined path for walking with Renzo, Dona and Pachin in Providencia, Guadalajara

Walking with dogs in Providencia, Guadalajara: my daily routes with Renzo, Dona and Pachin

During 2025 I lived in Guadalajara, Jalisco, in Colonia Providencia, and my daily routine revolved around walking my three dogs — Renzo, Dona and Pachin — beneath the ficus, ash and jacaranda trees of Avenida Rubén Darío, Terranova and Parque Italia. Providencia is one of the best neighbourhoods in Guadalajara for walking with dogs if you know how to pick the quieter side streets, use the shade of the ficus, tabachines and jacarandas, and organise the walk when you have three leads in your hand.

Stopp 1 · Providencia · Tree-lined median

Avenida Rubén Darío

Green corridor shaded by ficus and jacaranda trees where Renzo always sets the pace in the mornings.

Why Providencia is ideal for walking with three dogs

Unlike denser parts of Guadalajara, Providencia combines avenues with green central medians and very quiet interior streets — such as Florencia, Italia, Colomos or Bogotá — where traffic drops and the pavements stay shaded almost all year round. When I stepped out every morning in 2025 with Renzo, Dona and Pachin, that combination let us put together 3 to 5 km loops without repeating the same block.

How Renzo, Dona and Pachin share the walk

Walking three dogs through the city means each one needs their own place on the pavement. On our walks through Providencia I quickly learned each dog’s rhythm:

  • Renzo always wants to walk half a step ahead setting the pace along Avenida Rubén Darío, alert to every dog that appears on the corner.
  • Dona prefers the inside edge of the pavement, looking for strips of fresh grass and stopping to sniff the gardens of classic Providencia houses.
  • Pachin is the most curious of the three: any morning bakery scent along Terranova or puddle after a Guadalajara rain shower makes him turn his head.
Pack-walking tip: use a double coupler or leads of different lengths that do not tangle, and always keep all three on the building side when crossing avenues such as Pablo Neruda or Terranova.

The best quiet streets inside the neighbourhood

If you want a relaxed walk away from the noise of Avenida Américas or López Mateos, turn into the streets between Rubén Darío and Montevideo. Streets such as Italia, Florencia, Pisa and Colomos have mature trees whose canopies meet overhead, wide driveways where it is easy to give way to other neighbours with dogs, and small neighbourhood parks like Parque Italia.

The best times of day for Guadalajara weather

In Guadalajara the sun climbs fast, especially between March and June before the summer rains arrive. In 2025 our sacred window in Providencia was heading out between 7:00 and 8:45 in the morning, when the asphalt is cool and the neighbourhood smells of damp earth and freshly ground coffee, and taking our second long walk after 7:00 in the evening.

Water, bags and neighbourhood etiquette

Although many cafés and shops in Providencia leave water bowls outside, a small bowl is never enough when you walk with three dogs. Always carry a large bottle with a collapsible bowl so Renzo, Dona and Pachin can drink in turns, bring extra waste bags and always pick up after them: keeping Providencia’s pavements clean is what keeps the neighbourhood so welcoming to dogs.
