Landscape photography in the west of Ireland (with your dogs in the frame)

The west of Ireland is a dream for landscape photographers: mountains, lakes, bogs and the Atlantic, under skies that change by the minute. The same weather that soaks you also gives you rainbows, shafts of light and clouds that make a photo. And if you walk with dogs, they can be the best part of the picture, giving a sense of scale and a story to a wide view. Here's how to make the most of both.

Work with the weather

Don't wait for a perfect blue sky. The most dramatic light in the west comes with showers: the moment a band of rain clears, the air is clean, colours are rich and the light breaks through in patches. Check the forecast and the rain radar from Met Éireann, and head out when a clearance is due. With the sun behind you after a shower, look for a rainbow.

Use golden hour

The hour after sunrise and the hour before sunset give warm, low light that shows the shape of the land. The chart on this page shows golden hour and sunset times for Connemara through the year. In summer, sunset can be after 10 pm, so evening shoots fit in after a full day; in winter, the sun stays low all day, which is good news for photographers.

Practical tip: plan the walk so you're at your viewpoint at golden hour, not halfway up the hill, and carry a head torch for the walk back down.

Places worth the walk

  • Diamond Hill, Connemara National Park: the Twelve Bens and Kylemore from the summit (see Diamond Hill with dogs).
  • Killary Harbour: a long, narrow sea inlet between steep mountains on the Galway–Mayo border, often called one of Ireland's fjords. Mussel rafts make good patterns from above.
  • The Sky Road, near Clifden: a loop high above the coast with views over the bay and the islands. Use the lay-bys and keep dogs well away from the traffic.
  • The Burren: limestone pavement and Mullaghmore in low, raking light (see the Burren with dogs).
  • Galway Bay: sunsets from the Prom and silhouettes on the beach (see Galway's coast with dogs).

Composition that works here

Wide views need something in the foreground to lead the eye in: a stone wall, a boardwalk, a bog pool, a crack in the limestone or a winding road. Put the horizon on a third rather than in the middle, give big skies more of the frame when the clouds are interesting, and include a person or a dog to show how big the mountains really are. Turn round, too: the view behind you is often lit better than the one in front.

Kit for wet and windy days

  • A lens cloth or two, for rain drops and salt spray on the coast.
  • A rain cover or a simple dry bag for the camera between shots.
  • A polarising filter to cut glare on wet rock and water and deepen skies.
  • A light tripod for low light, weighed down with your bag in the wind.
  • Spare batteries: cold and wind drain them faster.

Getting the dogs in the picture

  • Sit-stay first: position the dogs, step back and shoot before they get bored. Practise at home.
  • Get their attention with a treat or a squeaky toy just above the lens, so they look towards the camera with ears up.
  • Go low: shooting at the dogs' eye level makes the photo feel like their view of the landscape.
  • Freeze the action: for running dogs, use a fast shutter speed (around 1/1000 s), continuous focus and burst mode.
  • More than one dog: a rock, a wall or a bench gives them a natural place to sit together at the same height. Photograph them one at a time too.
  • Dark coats lose detail against bright skies, so expose for the dog or shoot with the light behind you.

Keep the dogs on their leads in the national parks and near livestock, as always. A long, thin lead is easy to hide or edit out later, and a dog that's safe is better than a photo without a lead.

Respect places and people

Park only where it's allowed and never block farm gates or passing places on narrow roads. Drones need permission in the national parks and are restricted in many other places, so check the rules before you fly. And share the view: step aside so others can enjoy the same viewpoint.
