Some walks define an entire city, and crossing the Brooklyn Bridge on foot is unquestionably one of the great urban experiences in the world. During my time in New York I walked this span at different hours of the day: early in the morning to feel the bridge almost empty, and late in the afternoon to linger on the Brooklyn waterfront watching Manhattan’s skyscrapers light up window by window.

Brooklyn Bridge Pedestrian Walkway

World-famous 1883 suspension bridge boardwalk between Lower Manhattan and Brooklyn.

Crossing the elevated boardwalk of the Brooklyn Bridge

Begin beside City Hall Park in Lower Manhattan and step onto the elevated timber pedestrian walkway of the Brooklyn Bridge. As you walk toward the twin neo-Gothic granite towers, the diagonal web of steel suspension cables creates a hypnotic geometry seen in everything from Saturday Night Fever and Annie Hall to In the Heights.

My personal advice: don't rush the centre span. Pause at the stone alcoves inside each tower to look north toward the Manhattan Bridge and south toward the Statue of Liberty across New York Harbor.

DUMBO and the classic Washington Street frame

Take the Washington Street stairs down into DUMBO (Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass), a former nineteenth-century warehouse district now home to independent bookshops like PowerHouse Arena, roasteries and galleries.

Walk down to the intersection of Washington Street and Water Street: there, framed with millimetre precision between two red-brick warehouse walls, rises the steel tower of the Manhattan Bridge—immortalised on the poster of Sergio Leone's Once Upon a Time in America.

From Pebble Beach & Jane's Carousel to Brooklyn Heights Promenade

  • Pebble Beach & Jane's Carousel (Brooklyn Bridge Park): step down to the riverfront beach between the two bridges and pass the restored 1922 carousel inside Jean Nouvel's glass pavilion.
  • Climbing up to Brooklyn Heights Promenade: from Pier 1, follow the landscaped path or Montague Street up to the cantilevered pedestrian esplanade of Brooklyn Heights Promenade.
  • The cinema bench facing Manhattan: this quiet balcony above the river offers the cleanest panoramic view of Lower Manhattan, famous from Moonstruck and Annie Hall.
Blue hour from the Brooklyn shore: arrive at the Brooklyn Heights Promenade about 20 minutes before sunset. As the sky turns deep cobalt and the towers of the Financial District and the Brooklyn Bridge light up, you have the quintessential New York postcard right in front of you.

Returning by ferry across the East River

Instead of taking the subway back, walk down to the DUMBO / Fulton Ferry landing at Pier 1 and hop on the NYC Ferry across to Wall Street / Pier 11—sailing right underneath the Brooklyn Bridge for the price of a regular transit ticket.
