Bow Bridge over The Lake in Central Park: one of the most filmed cast-iron bridges in New York cinema history.

Central Park Through the Lens: Bow Bridge, The Mall, Bethesda Terrace & Classic New York Cinema

The first time I stepped into Central Park from 59th Street, I had the strange and wonderful feeling of having been there dozens of times before. For anyone who loves cinema, walking through New York is not discovering an unknown set: it is finally stepping inside the screen. During the time I lived in and walked the city, this loop from the southeast corner up to Bow Bridge became my favourite morning ritual with a coffee in hand.

Gapstow Bridge & The Pond

Iconic stone arch bridge framing the Plaza Hotel and Midtown skyline (Home Alone 2, The Devil Wears Prada).

Why Central Park is best walked like a sequence of film shots

Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux designed Central Park in the nineteenth century as a sequence of pastoral scenes that reveal themselves gradually around every curve. Without intending to, they invented cinematic montage applied to urban landscape: you move from the bustle of Fifth Avenue to quiet water at Gapstow Bridge, climb beneath the leafy cathedral of The Mall, and suddenly the grand staircase of Bethesda Terrace opens before you.

Leg 1: Gapstow Bridge to The Mall (the classic 59th Street entrance)

Start at the corner of Fifth Avenue and 59th Street beside the Plaza Hotel. Head down to The Pond and pause on Gapstow Bridge: that vine-draped stone bridge with the Midtown skyscrapers behind it is the exact frame from Home Alone 2 and The Devil Wears Prada. Early in the morning, the reflection of the towers on calm water looks like a 35mm film still.

From there, walk unhurriedly up toward The Mall and Literary Walk, the only intentionally straight avenue in all of Central Park. Its double row of American elms forms a natural vault where unforgettable scenes from When Harry Met Sally, Breakfast at Tiffany's and Kramer vs. Kramer were filmed.

Leg 2: Bethesda Terrace, the Fountain and crossing Bow Bridge

At the northern end of The Mall you reach the upper balcony of Bethesda Terrace. Pause at the carved stone parapet to look down at the Angel of the Waters fountain and rowboats crossing the Lake, then walk down through the subterranean arcade: its ceiling of more than 15,000 Minton encaustic tiles has magical acoustics and has appeared in everything from The Avengers and John Wick to Enchanted.

  • Bow Bridge (West 74th Street): turn left along the water's edge to reach the graceful 1862 cast-iron bridge—the romantic heart of New York film from Woody Allen's Manhattan to Autumn in New York and Spider-Man 3.
  • Loeb Boathouse & the northern shore: sit for five minutes on the lakeside benches watching rowboats glide past with the twin towers of the San Remo rising above the Upper West Side.
  • Exit via Strawberry Fields & The Dakota (West 72nd Street): finish the walk heading west past the Imagine mosaic and the historic façade of the Dakota building on Central Park West.
Angel's cinema lighting tip: for the most cinematic golden light in Central Park, walk this route between 7:30 and 9:30 am or an hour before sunset. In autumn the elms along The Mall turn deep amber, straight out of a Nora Ephron film.

Where to grab coffee afterwards on the Upper West Side

Stepping out at West 72nd Street, stroll two blocks over to Columbus or Amsterdam Avenue for classic neighbourhood bakeries, fresh bagels at Zabar's a few blocks north at 80th Street, and quiet benches to look back through your photos.
