Sunset light for photographing Renzo, Dona and Pachin between Providencia and Glorieta Minerva

Sunsets, jacarandas and dog photography from Providencia to Glorieta Minerva in Guadalajara

As a photographer, one of the greatest joys of living in Guadalajara during 2025 was its sunset light. In spring the streets of Providencia and Vallarta Norte turn violet with blooming jacarandas and then fiery red with tabachines; in summer, storm clouds paint dramatic skies just before sundown. Walking south from Colonia Providencia to the iconic Glorieta Minerva with Renzo, Dona and Pachin gave us some of my favourite photographs in Mexico.

Glorieta Minerva

Guadalajara’s emblem lit up by the golden Jalisco sunset sky.

The golden-hour route: from Providencia towards Vallarta and La Minerva

Whenever we wanted a longer, photogenic evening walk, we left Providencia an hour before sunset, heading down tree-lined streets towards Avenida México, Golfo de Cortés and Arcos Vallarta until we reached the Glorieta Minerva. Along the way, mid-20th-century residential architecture blends with colourful planted medians.

Seasons of colour in Guadalajara: jacarandas, tabachines and summer skies

  • February to April (Jacarandas): Providencia’s pavements are covered in a violet carpet. Photographing Renzo, Dona and Pachin from a low angle near ground level lets the fallen blossoms fill both foreground and background.
  • May and June (Tabachines): the orange and red canopies filter the 6:30 p.m. light with an warm glow ideal for portraits.
  • July to September (Rainy-season skies): right before or after an afternoon shower, the sky above La Minerva turns gold and deep indigo while pavement puddles create clean reflections.
Photography tip with three dogs: shoot individual portraits first while each dog is fresh, and save the group shot of all three together for a low bench or wide step where Renzo, Dona and Pachin sit at the same eye level.

How to capture sharp city photos without dropping the leads

In a lively city like Guadalajara, your dogs’ safety always comes first: never unclip leads near avenues just to take a photo. What I did throughout 2025 was use slim neutral-toned leads, ask for a stay on a wide median or quiet corner, crouch down to their eye level and anchor the leads under my foot or in my left hand just out of frame while shooting with my right.

The evening walk back to Providencia

As soon as the sun dips behind La Minerva, temperatures drop to the ideal level for walking back towards Providencia. Main avenues such as Rubén Darío, Terranova and Avenida México are well lit and full of evening life, rounding off a rewarding walk for both you and your dogs.
